How to Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home (Easy Recipe)
Cold brew isn't just iced coffee. It's coffee steeped slowly in cold water for many hours, which gives a smooth, low acid and naturally sweet drink. And it's very easy to make at home.
What you need
- 100 g of coffee, ground coarse (like coarse salt)
- 800 ml of cold, filtered water
- A large jar or pitcher
- A fine sieve, a paper filter or a French press
The recipe
- Grind coarse. A grind that's too fine makes the cold brew muddy and bitter.
- Mix. Add the coffee and the water to the jar and stir well so all the grounds are wet.
- Steep 12 to 18 hours in the fridge. Start with 14 hours, then adjust to your taste.
- Filter. Pour through the sieve and a paper filter, or simply press the plunger of a French press.
- Serve. You now have a concentrate. Dilute it with about the same amount of water or milk and pour it over ice.
Storage
Keep your cold brew in a closed container in the fridge. It stays at its best for about 7 days.
Which coffee for cold brew?
Coffees with chocolate, caramel and nutty notes are perfect: they come out round and sweet. From the Karbur lineup, try Möjo (cocoa, toasted nuts, vanilla) or Armöny (cocoa, caramel, almond). For a fruitier cold brew, Örakle from Ethiopia is a beautiful choice.
Tips for a better cold brew
- Too strong? Add more water or ice. Too weak? Use more coffee next time or steep a little longer.
- Steeping more than 24 hours can bring out woody, bitter notes.
- Cold brew is often higher in caffeine than a regular cup, so go easy on the concentrate.
